Ed Lizard
I'm sorry but can we just dedicate the energy in bickering to actually donating online?? people there really need help and i assume most of us here can spare ten bucks or two... so please do; there are many organizations out there, someone already mentioned the save the children, American Red Cross also has the webpage below: http://www.redcross.org/ If you have paypal, you can also donate directly to the Philippine Red Cross: http://www.redcross.org.ph/ thank you http://www.crosscatholic.org/ has boots on the ground in the RP, Haiti and the DR. Because many of its workers are either Catholic religious or volunteers, it has very low overhead. The website has a tab to target donations to Filipino disaster relief. Tullioz has started a thread, he is in the RP, and will transport food and various medicines to areas likely to be last served. I don't think we've even really heard much from Samar yet, some of the video from places like Cebu, not directly in the path, suggest they'll need a lot of help. I do hope, as an American, we dispatch one of the hospital ships.
NavyMatt
Can't say much regarding the USNS Mercy, but the Comfort doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'm at the hospital that staffs the ship, and we're business as usual.

mattb65
The news just keeps getting worse. Hard to believe the loss of life from this storm. I feared these numbers would start coming out after we heard the first hand accounts from Josh and his fellow chasers. I think if some data is able to survive, the 195 mph strength will be supported and I imagine the minimum central pressure may be <895 mb. Very glad the Josh made it out safely. I'll also echo what others have said and request the ethical discussion be broken out into a new thread. It's a very worthy topic to debate but I don't believe this is the right thread for that discussion.

hypatia
Your story is incredible, Josh. I may have more to say on the subject later, but I believe that you acted just as any decent person would do. Your bravery and compassion inspires me.I will say, that as a result of the attention you and your chase team brought to this horrible tragedy, I decided to donate to the Philippine Red Cross. I don't have a ton of money to spare but it doesn't matter to me. Your coverage of this event has enlightened thousands to the human suffering occurring in these areas. Those saying that you have somehow detracted from what the people in these areas are experiencing are totally wrong. If it weren't for your incredible story, I probably would have no idea of the humanitarian need as a result of this disaster. Not to mention that you literally saved lives during the course of your actions at that hotel. You are an incredible person, Josh. I hope others will be inspired to help as a result of the story you have been able to tell us.Please, everyone, help if you can (this is a list of charities involved in helping victims of Haiyan): http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/11/09/haiyan-how-you-can-help/3484467/
ncforecaster89
On a completely different note, I'm just so thankful that Josh and the other chasers survived-although deeply saddened by those residents that did not. Like so many others, I'm very interested in hearing what the lowest barometric pressure they were able to record.

eyewall
Was anyone able to photograph stadium clouds? I don't believe so, as Josh and his crew never made it into the eye (it passed just south of them). Perhaps someone from the area did, but we won't know that for some time, if at all. dan11295
Very important thing I picked up from Josh there was how quickly conditions got very bad, both wind and surge wise. He was a few blocks from the coast and had some elevation and there was still multiple fatalities in his immediate area. Basically almost anyone closer to the water stuck at ground level was dead. Poster on previous page mentioned a water height of 21' at the airport. Not sure if that is above water or ground level. If that's ground level and There was ~3' of water in the hotel at ~26' elevation. Both stats point to close to 30' of surge.
eyewall
So he measured 960 mb in the eyewall and said in downtown he experienced Cat 4 conditions (Extreme conditions for sure, but well below the max winds). He also said Cat 5 conditions likely occurred in more exposed locations such as the airport.
bobbutts
Does anyone have IKE data about this storm? With Cat 4 @ 960mb and a much lower central pressure, must indicate absolutely extreme winds at the most intense part of the eyewall.

wxeyeNH
Josh, got out of there just in time. With a city of 200,000 and food and water trickling in things may get very violent and desperate with shooting and looting and people taking out their anger and frustration on anything including westerns. I fear its going to turn into a very unsafe situation in the next few days.

hurricaneman
Fame sucks Josh saved lives and gets trashed, but in a survival situation you want to be the first one out of the area and when you're not is going to cause anger, frustration, and possible feeling of abandonment

donsutherland1
He does not have many fans in the comment section below the article. It's unfortunate that it is extremely difficult to post comments in that forum (I got repeatedly timed out). The reality is that the reporter who wrote the story, the chasers, and those they helped rescue know what actually took place. The keyboard and phone snipers who are so eagerly blasting away know little or nothing, even as their ignorance produces arrogance that appears to rival their hostility. Perhaps none of those critics have ever saved even a single life, much less in highly adverse conditions. Perhaps many or all of them would be unwilling to take even a modest degree of risk to save a life. P.S. My message finally posted. Unfortunately, it appeared at the top after I had referenced messages above mine.

There are comments over the top on both sides. Reading the threads has convinced me that Josh is somewhere between Mother Teresa and Satan himself. Basically, thrill seekers are never welcome at disaster sites. By his own admission, that is exactly what Josh is. I'm not condemning him at all, and he did some good while he was there, but he will get the reactions he is getting every single time.
