I'm heading home tonight from the urban jungle of NYC... can't wait to roll back into town. Mansfield is doing its usual thing of turning a non-event into a full-on snowstorm. The weather is really warm there right now and it may not cool down enough tonight to allow them to open. I'd recommend holding off unless you are in the area or a season pass holder with extra spare time. For me, I'll be knocking out some yard work that I put off the last few weeks. powderfreak Posted October 26, 2013 Share Posted October 26, 2013 First turns of the season for me today...another 2-3" fell early this morning and it was pure fluff, on top of the 6-8" that fell in the past 72 hours. Mansfield is coming through big-time right now. More snow moving through this evening with the clipper. Always promising driving to the mountain with this going on... Mid-winter on the hill. Bretton Woods opens up on Saturday November 16th and they should have some kind of opening day lift ticket deal. I bet by Saturday the snow is really nice and there are 2-3 long blue cruiser runs open. I always find it's a good way to shake off the rust with a discounted opening day lift ticket, nice gradual consistent pitch, and friendly staff. The only problem is that the weekend of the 16th is the ski expo in Boston and I've got to go accompany a friend so we can book our big group trip to Utah this year. Overall the conditions were pretty good and I was pretty stoked to be sking NH this early in the season. Even though the base was in the mid 30's they were still blowing snow allday Saturday although they shut down snowmaking that evening when they got 3" of natural snow. radarman Posted November 11, 2013 Share Posted November 11, 2013 Day 1 in the books for me, oh yeah. Mid winter cord under the North Ridge chair and the crowds not overwhelming. Even on blown out rock skis with dull edges I had no trouble making high speed rhythmic turns, fully in control with loose snow on the surfaces. In fact had I known the conditions were in such good shape I'd have brought the regular skis instead. Down low the coverage was deep, but the snow was a bit choppy. But there were moguls to be had which made the trek back to the Gondy enjoyable and worth making. Days like today you certainly spend the bulk of your time on the lift, but with the sun shining, a fully whitened scene, and lots of quality skiers to watch it's entertaining all the same. I spoke to one couple who said they were on day 13 or 14 already. The woman said, "I skied 154 days last year", her husband chimed in, "I only skied 147". 15 is my goal every year, everything else is gravy. But on 11/11, after a mere 5 1/2 month layoff I'm back on pace. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I used to be more of a snob and only make the drive up after big storms, but the last few years I find myself enjoying all types of conditions, not just the deep powder days when the woods are ready.
