Fun visualization of effects of model convection

Recommended Posts

This is from the 12z NAM forecast for 18z Saturday.

Really neat toroidal feature going on, evident the vertical velocity field (850mb and 700mb) ... circular area of subsidence, surrounded by an edge of rising air. This coincides with convective precipitation in the model.

At 500mb, the vertical velocity pattern reverses ... core of rising motion coinciding with the model convection, surrounded by an edge of sinking air.

So we can visualize the 3D circulations induced as a result of convection triggered in the model. In addition, there are effects on all levels of the atmosphere, relating to the divergence field acting on vorticity and affecting height tendency.

All stuff we know ... the importance of convective parameterization in the model on upscale error growth etc. But kind of cool to visualize here.
