Eh, it's still early. Sure the upper Midwest and Lakes departures may have some significance, but for the rest of us they're just filler.

The good news is it's very early and those negative departures are all well within the reach of a single storm. The bad news is we are about to head into the heart of winter with at least another 7-10 days of futility on deck, so we'll be looking at some respectable departures by the time we hit mid-month.

Well I guess my point is, most of those departures...assumed departures, can be wiped out relatively quickly in mid December. Of course the Upper Midwest/Lakes is a different story. But I tried to use the locations where a lot of us live, or close enough...to show what is "expected" in that timeframe. We'll see.

The heart of winter, or at least the meteorological "dead of winter" is in late January, or 2 months away! Departures this time of year, as said, are filler, except for the far north. No departure (pos or neg)

this time of year means anything for the winter. Although for the far north it must be discouraging to already be several inches in the red.

No idea to be honest. My "stat knowledge" only applies to the Midwest/Lakes. Sorry.

But winter 2010-11 was pretty much cold on both sides.

I used to have the thought that both Alaska and Europe would have warmer than normal (for their respective averages) when we were colder than normal, and vice versa. But remember its just a guess of mine, I sort of recall after one of our recent harsh winters hearing they had a very warm winter. But thats just my vague recollection, I too am limited to midwest/Lakes climo. Not to mention, when we are mild and/or snowless, heavy snow elsewhere is magnified....when we have a snowy pattern, are we REALLY worried about or even paying attention to Europe? I dont think so

Nearly 2 feet below normal in the West Michigan sites.

I think this polygon, pretty much represents areas that have missed out on a 3" or greater snowfall this season (in our subforum). Roughly... some spots downwind of Lake MI have picked up 3" or more of lake effect at one time. For example: Just north of Alek.

Any input to areas that have or have not seen a 3" snowfall yet - I'm welcome to more info, so I can update this.

Lansing got hit with a 6-10 inch storm on Nov 29th-30th last year that highly inflated their seasonal total to this point. Lansing is one of only a few locations running behind last year.
