Our region's extreme run

The persistence of the heat is starting to become interesting (well, warmest May was interesting)... not sure how long it can sustain but it's done a good job since May at least. We were due to kick the blue bubble too. Given ensembles seems we should be in running with the high spots for 90+ in DC at the end of June. Keep that rolling into July and even a cool Aug doesn't do a ton except keep you out of 2010 territory.

Its really interesting to me how much persistence has played a role this decade (which is why this thread exists in the first place I guess). We go from mostly persistent heat (3/2010 - 1/2013) then to mostly persistent cold (1/2014 - 3/2015) and now back to heat? Maybe, idk.

Just like June 2013, I'm gonna go ahead and throw out a "top ten wettest June on record watch" again for BWI.

BWI has now clinched at least 7th place with 8.02" so far. Getting past 8.08" will move them up to 6th. This is also ahead of 2013, which had 7.81" total.

Edit: forgot about the middle of the night stuff, so BWI is definitely over the 8.08" mark for 6th place.

DCA is in the same range, with 7.86 inches of precipitation so far in June, placing it 7th all-time, even if no more were to fall this month. However, it's still a long way from the record June total of 14.02 inches, set in 2006.

BWI has 9.98" so that's the wettest June ever. Next milestone will be getting the double digit rain mark which is almost certain to happen. There's only 11 other months that ever reached the double digits (and none were in June):

Aug 1955 - 18.35

Aug 1933 - 13.83

Sept 2011 - 13.32

Sept 1934 - 12.41

Aug 1911 - 12.28

Sept 1999 - 11.5

Jul 1889  - 11.03

Aug 1971 - 10.91

Jul 1905 - 10.65

Sept 1876 - 10.52

Aug 2011 - 10.38

Jul 1905 - 10.65

Sept 1876 - 10.52

Aug 2011 - 10.38

It's interesting to note how widely rainfall varies between Baltimore and DC.  Here are the DC figure for those same months, with the DC surplus or deficit relative to Baltimore shown in parentheses:

Aug 1955 - 14.31 (-4.04)

Aug 1933 -  9.91 (-3.92)

Sept 2011 - 8.84 (-4.48)

Sept 1934 - 17.45 (5.04)

Aug 1911 - 7.27 (-5.01)

Sept 1999 - 10.27 (-1.23)

Jul 1889  - 8.13 (-2.90)

Aug 1971 - 7.18 (-3.73)

Jul 1905 - 9.95 (-0.70)

Sept 1876 - 10.81 (0.29)

Aug 2011 - 8.92 (-1.46)

So far this month, DCA has 9.18 inches, but that still leaves it 4.84 inches short of the June record of 14.02 inches, set just nine years ago, when BWI had just 7.32 inches.  So, in June 2006, DCA had a 6.70 inch surplus relative to BWI.

Fun to break a record.  IAD is at 5.48" for more variability.

The disparity in the extreme rainfall months is interesting. So where is DCA ranked for this month right now?

I didn't realize IAD was so much lower. My house, DCA and BWI are all generally in the same 9" range. I'd like to see a monthly rainfall map of the region after the month is over.

Looking at those months - have to assume those were all pumped up with tropical systems or remnants maybe.

I am at 7.25", but half of that is from the last week.  IAD to my area to Manassas did not do well, as compared to other spots, in the first half of June.

Fifth all-time for June in DC.  Here is the table:

June 2006: 14.02

June 1972: 11.53

June 1900: 10.94

June 2013:   9.97

June 2015:   9.18

Second place is well within reach, but the record will be a challenge.

The top one, August 1955, was from hurricanes Connie and Diane.

August 1933 was from the unnamed mid-atlantic hurricane that I hear about a lot.

The more recent ones you all probably know: Sept. 1999 was Floyd, Aug. 2011 was Irene, Sept. 2011 was Lee remnants.

I haven't looked into the others but I agree, I'm sure its all tropical systems or their remnants.

June 2015 at DCA is now up to 11.01 inches of precipitation, making it the third wettest June in DC history, and the 11th wettest of 1734 months overall.

BWI has 2.86" for the the day so far, which is a daily record. The previous record was 2.04" in 1883.

Monthly total is now 12.84", which is 4th rainiest month ever. We're not getting first place but there's a good chance we could still get 2nd or 3rd, especially with more rain possibly overnight and again on Tues.

With yesterday's record-breaking rainfall, June 2015 at DCA is now at 11.93 inches, which not only places the month second all-time in DC for June, but eighth overall.  Here is the list of Top Ten rainiest months ever in DC, since official records began in 1871:

September 1934: 17.45 inches

August 1928:       14.41 inches
August 1906:       14.36 inches
August 1955:       14.31 inches

June 1972:           11.53 inches

So BWI has 13.09" which is 4th. Both 3rd and 2nd wettest month are less than an inch away. Tuesday is our last shot now.

The rainiest summer ever is 1955 with 25.38". This is probably the next record to go for as we're already halfway there.

No rain yesterday at BWI so this is where we finished, rainiest June and 4th rainiest month ever.

They got 0.62" for today and many chances of rain are in the forecast, so I'm liking the rainiest summer record more and more.

For temperatures the month ended up way lower than I thought, with an average of only 74.1 degrees (+1.7 departure).

Remember when we were looking at top ten coldest year though back in early April? That was pretty funny.

DCA added 0.01 inches to finish at 11.94 inches for June 2015 (8th rainiest month in DC history), with last night's good-sized storm (0.97 inches) occurring entirely after midnight. The average June 2015 temperature at DCA was 78.1 degrees, a departure of +2.9, and the 6th warmest June in DC history.  However, just five years ago, the all-time June record of 80.6 degrees was set at DCA, and so we were a long way from that.

Well...there are six months left in the year.
