All of mine were in Potomac, MD, and I'm definitely not complaining about the 20"+ frequency. I think it's pretty fantastic that I've seen five of them so far. I am curious to see just how much better northern and northeastern MD does than we do in the DC area for catching 10"+ accumulations.

How close was it for the 2/10-11/10 blizzard? I found that to be the hardest storm I've ever tried to measure, not just because of the winds, but also from trying to dig out a spot to put my wood board on after the previous storm.

9.1" I believe, but yes, the half of it that came after the winds picked up (superband!) was mostly an educated guess. It did line up with other reports in FFX co. Northern VA didn't fare as well, especially the further W and S.

I won't list any since I've lived here because they will be repeated by others, but I have two from when I lived in SW VA.

Superstorm - 26 inches, winds at or above 30 mph for a period of about 18 hours, drifts over 15 feet in places. Most incredible weather event in my life, and porbably the life of millions of people.

First weekend in April of 1987. 25-30 inches on ground that was probably above 50 degrees temp. Snow started late on Thursday and it snowed until late Saturday night. A truly remarkable event for two reasons. One, the calendar, two, the localized nature. It was, as far as I know, limited only to the higher elevations of the south-central Apps. I wish someone with ready access could post some info on this storm.

*And of course, 6-12"+, 26 Jan 1978 (This to me is still the quintessential blizzard, though I've been in several storms that had a lot more snow. Record low pressure, 28.28" measured at KCLE, sustained winds over 40MPH with gusts approaching 100MPH, temperature dropped 30 degrees between 4AM and 6AM, remained in the low teens and single digits through rest of the day. It was literally life-threatening to even go outside, the entire state of Ohio was essentially shut down for a few days.)

Feb 83- I lived 2 miles from KILG. Their official is 14.4 from like 1.7 qpf. That's wrong. It's more like 18 or so. NO ONE on the EC who was all snow had less than a 10- ratio. Even the Port of Wilminton had something like 14 inches from 1.25 liquid (likely under done)

Jan 22 87- 12.5

Feb 22 87- 17.7 ( I had the "official ILG total on the sidewalk where it melted 2 hours- 14.4) on the wood deck it was an even 17.7 confirmed by a neighbor)

Superstorm 93- 14.5 - Was in Chattanooga for college but home for Spring Break. Chattanooga had 22 inches.

January 96- 22.3

Relocated to Lynchburg, VA- This was their LONGEST drought without a 10+ storm.

NOTHING until March 09- 10.5 inches.

December 09 12.5 official ( more like 14.5 at my place just west of town. I've beat this down, but that little jog north last second on the 700 mb low pushed the BEST banding JUST NW of LYH-- like 15-20 miles where 18 inches or more was commons. )

Jan 30, 10 12 inches. Good storm-- nice duration about 10:30 Friday night to 1 AM sunday- that last backlash pushed us over a foot.

March 15 99- Hagerstown, MD- 13.5 inches

Gowanda, NY- December 01- 3 Feet plus.

Christmas 2002- Scranton, PA 16 inches.

Albany, NY Jan 3-4 2003 22 inches.

Presidents Day- knew the sleet fest was immanent in LYH- went to Winchester, VA 22 inches.

LES BIG SNOW- Feb 07-- Saw like 4 feet fall.

So being in DC proper/I95 corridor caused you to have more 10"+ storms than the NW suburbs (we missed out on the heaviest in 11/87 and 1/00) but caused you to have less 20"+ totals. Makes sense-- since this area does get hit with storms that have sharp precip gradients aligned SW to NE.

I took "locally" in the title to mean only the mid-atlantic, but far be it from me to post more snowfall stats

10+" from my locations in MN/ND 1986-2004 (lived in CA for a while prior - no snow there, don't remember anything from pre-82 or so, so I don't count it)

Jan 20-21, 1988 - 13.0"

Mar 3-4, 1989 - 10.5"

Oct 31-Nov 1, 1991 - 20.9" - my other 20" storm

Mar 9-10, 1992 - 10.2"

Nov 18-19, 1998 - 12.9"

Mar 8-9, 1999 - 13.0"

Oct 24-25, 2001 - 10.9"

So, yeah, not that many big storms. As an example, we had 57.2" of snow in 96/97, not more than 8" at a time. Minneapolis fared better over this timeframe, my hometown was closer to Iowa and had more temperature problems.

The climo is interesting though, 3 in March, 1.5 in Oct and Nov, 1 in Jan, 0 in Dec or Feb. Really need the Gulf of Mexico moisture to get up there, and often times by Dec-Feb it is just shut off. Now, certain years it doesn't happen like that, such as last year in Minneapolis and the early 80s bonanza.

Really wish I had been cognizent for this stretch. All of the snow of Feb '10, with the brutal temps at the end.

I grew up in SW and Central Ohio in the 70s and 80s, and the most snow I ever saw in one storm during all that time was just under 14 inches in a freak spring storm in 1987. Otherwise, maxing out between 8 and 12 inches was the best I ever saw, and even then, not a lot of that.

The three storms in Dec. '09 and Feb. '10 that I experienced in Baltimore was easily the most magical and highest snow totals I have ever been in and I yearn to experience a storm like any of those 3 again.

Too many to recount being I lived in Montgomery County Maryland, The District, and Coastal Delaware from the early 1950s to the early 2000s. Lots of great snowstorms during those 50 years!

Most memorable: the many school closings during the '60s, the unexpected monster snowstorm one February in the late '70s that shut down D.C. for a whole week, a raging blizzard on the Delaware coast, the intense lightning and thunder with the ('93?) massive snowstorm, the huge snowfalls of ('95?), and the relentless winter snows in Germantown that marked my final ('02/'03) winter in the area.

For an overall weather balance of pleasant, variable, and energizing, the Mid-Atlantic is superb.
