Great stuff as always, Uncle. They say that the only day that NYC stayed below zero since 1800 was January 10,1859.

Again those years were before urban development..so temps especially nights were lower..but yea..mini ice age in effect in the early mid 1800's

Interesting stats. Do they have precip/snowfall records too? Amazing how 1836 had 5 of the coldest months.

I have precipitation from Jamaica Queens from 1826 to 1860's...I'll add it to this post when I have time...Governors Island is effected by marine air and is not far from Battery Park where weather records were kept from 1870 to 1960...I don't know of any snowfall records for this area before 1869...I think there were heavy snows in 1830's...1836 had a big snow...Don Sutherland has a great site with past weather...

1831 and 1836 had storms over 15" in spots...The average monthly and annual temperatures fit in nicely with Central Parks records starting in 1869...The winter of 1856-57 is remembered for the cold snowstorm with temperatures around zero...Only January was cold that year...The big thaw in February caused flooding in the NE...David Ludlum wrote about the 1836 snow in his book...
