1. Labor Day Derecho September 1998 - Living in Queens at the time with increable winds gust in my area with vivid lightning and loud thunder with the F-2 tornado in Lybrook.

2. July 18. 2006 - Amazing winds and widespread damaging winds in a wide area.

3. July 18, 2007 - Morning EF-1 Tornado that hit Islip Terrance and that was only 10-15 minutes away at that time where I was living at the time. Strong winds with very loud thunder and drenching flooding rains by me.

4. July 27, 2008 - Hail by me with gust winds as well.

5. September 16, 2010 - Tornadoes in Queens and Brooklyn where by me wind gust up to 35 mph with vivid lightning and thunder and heavy downpours. What made up since the storms did weaken by me where several round of storms went on and off through the night which did make it quite amazing.

9/16/10-Midnight black skies gave way to frightening sounding Macroburst winds up to 125MPH followed by 80MPH+ derecho winds(A neighbor of mine one block away registered 122MPH winds on his anemometer) downed more trees in my area than I have ever seen in my lifetime combined.in my area with the tops of trees being carried several hundred feet onto Woodhaven Blvd from St johns cemetery.Bus Shelter winders blown to bits many windows blown out.A Pay phone by the 7-11 was ripped out and blown 250 feet to the Rite Aid.Nearly $30,000 damage to my property.This event was so incredible that other events pale in comparasion to such a great degree it is not even worth mentioning.

You are likely thinking about the period in NOV 1989 where we had 2 memorable severe weather outbreaks.One on the 16th in Upstate NY that damaged a school and the Super Cold Front on the evening of NOV 20 1989 which bought the cold and set the stage for the White Thanksgiving.

The East Coldenham Elementary School disaster, sometimes known simply as the Coldenham disaster, was a disaster that occurred on November 16, 1989 in the Town of Newburgh, New York, at approx. 11:35 a.m., in which a tornado-strength wind blew down a free-standing cafeteria wall, killing nine students and injuring 18 others. Though the event was officially recorded as a F1 tornado, conclusive evidence from a survey by a team led by Ted Fujita and others indicates that it was a downburst instead.

The East Coldenham Elementary School disaster received a tremendous amount of national and international media coverage at the time of the tragedy because most major news media outlets were at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, just ten miles away, to cover the awarding of the Sylvanus Thayer Award to former President Ronald Reagan, and accordingly were on site within minutes.[3]

I was only 7 years old in 1989 but there were many thunderstorms that year I could recall. I hope this year is repeat of 1989.

I couldnt tell you, because I have missed every legitimate severe thunderstorm that has ever hit my neighborhood. Most recently last month I missed a huge hail core by 2 miles.. Last September 13th a storm went severe just to my east and southeast (This did have the darkest, scariest sky approach I have ever seen though). July 18th, 2006 I was in Cali, August 2nd, 2002 I was in Cali, Labor Day 98 I was on a jet ski in Toms River and we got skipped, came home to trees down and damage everywhere...

Right after an historic early season heatwave! The April after that we got hit with a snowstorm.

There was one I'n 1987 that slammed northern NJ with 80 moh wind gusts. It was the worst storm I've ever experienced, i was 8 at the time and not sure what month it was. I do remember it came straight from the north, maybe someone can help?

The only memorable one is September 2010, I was miles south of the action though (as usual), if I hadn't stayed home that day I would've been outside on my way home from Bayside during this storm, could've been fun in a weird way I guess. I remember it just as vividly as the storm we had 26 hours ago. There's still downed trees in Bayside.

I'm sure the Spring 2010 "Hurricane" doesn't really count, but that was the scariest storm ever. I remember it vividly, I was actually in it. I can go on for days about this one.

I can't recall any of these other events, some of them are older than I am lol.

November, 20 1989 - It was quite an experience being in a 727 at the time and seeing that lightning display and feeling that turbulence.

July 18, 1997 - 2 damaging wind events in the same day, one with the pre-frontal trough around 1-2pm....the next with the actual front at 9-10pm....exceptionally bad for the south shore of LI vs. the north shore....I think JFK and FRG gusted to around 60-70 mph....other than an event I no longer can recall from 1991 or 92 its the only time I can remember 2 separate events in the same day.

May 29/30, 1995 - Hit near midnight and dumped about 1 inch worth of pea to marble sized hail at my house and caused quite a bit of damage to some of the roofs in my neighborhood.

One thing I vividly remember about 1989 was how startling the changing of the seasons was that year-- we basically went from summer to winter and I remember all the leaves had changed color by the end of September and they were all off the leaves by the end of October. We must have had some big storm just before the end of October because I distinctly remember all the leaves coming down before Halloween and remarked how unusual that was. I thought we were in for a really big winter and when the big November storm happened and December started out so cold I thought I was right. But somehow our arctic-like December either had rain storms cutting to our west or insignificant clippers or storms supressed to our south burying DC. And then for some reason the damn NAO decided to do the old fliparoo on us and it was more of the same old same old record warm January and February and upper 80s in the middle of March during spring break. Such pathetic winters back then I was dying for someone to find a way to start the next ice age.

Hey did we have large hail with that event in July 1997? I remember reading in the paper about large hail falling in Woodmere and ruining a car dealership here some summer back in the 90s but I was overseas and I dont recall which year it was.

Bayside was in path of a tornado also, by my work, and the next morning, bell blvd and almost every side street was impassable with dozens and dozens of trees scattered all over and houses damaged by winds.

Unbeatable storm for that part of Queens and parts of Brooklyn.

The macroburst damage around Queens College, Kew gardens, Forest Hills and Fresh Meadows was also incredible. Tree after tree after tree for miles and miles. Nonstop damage to town after town.

the 2009 to 2011 period has been amazing, two great winters and one great summer last year-- not only scorching heat but also lots of severe weather. All we have been missing is a hurricane.

I thought 2006-2008 were three great severe weather season because don't forget the July 18, 2006 event with the widespread wind damage from NYC through Long Island. On August 26 I think that year there was like an F-0 tornado on the Nassau/Suffolk Border like in Amytville. In 2007, there were two tornadic events including the one tornado in Islip Terrance and the second in State Island and one including the EF-2 tornado in Bay Ridge Brooklyn I think in August that year. In 2008 there were many severe weather events from June through August including a tornado warning took place in NYC.

Queens had 2 confirmed tornadoes as well as the big macroburst.

Same #1, but #2 and #3 go to #4 and #5 on my list...6/30/98 and 8/8/99 are my #2 and #3. I remember seeing a funnel cloud (my only time and on my 13th birthday!) with #2 in the northeast part of the sky on Vets Highway in Bohemia...did touch down briefly in Lake Ronkonkoma/Centereach/Selden.

JULY 18 1997 was memorable,especially the nighttime storms,some of the heaviest rainfall I have ever seen in a 10 minute period.

MAY 29th-30 1995 had the most intense line of thunderstorms I have ever experienced for May from 11PM-12AM.continous intense CG for 75 minutes.

JULY 31st 1996 had elevated storms develop along a stalled front around 10AM and dropped 4-6 inches of rain in Staten island,Southern Brooklyn and Southern Queens and Southern nassau and Suffolk Countys.Parts of the belt parkway had 5 feet of water on it as well as the Cross island parkway by Belmont Racetrack having several feet of water on it.The LIRR Mineola Train Station had water up to the platform level.Incredible storm.

Yeah, I wish I knew why the leaves changed so quickly and fell in 89-- from what I remember, everything was fast forwarded by a month and thats why I thought we'd have a big summer. After December it all went downhill, so it was probably a case of too much too fast.

I dont remember as quick of a change in 1995, what I do remember is it being in the upper 80s in the middle of October lol. That was the only time I didnt turn my heat on until November.
