2025 Mid-Atlantic Garden, Lawn, and Other Green Stuff Thread
MDSnow93 replied to mattie g's topic in Mid Atlantic
The two main things the hardening off process is for are sun exposure and wind exposure. As well as adapting to a broader range of temps. The sun part is obvious, but the stems and roots are really not equipped to handle any real wind. A calm day is best, and I also usually start with one hour on the first day. Then slowly add on a couple more hours before gradually adding time in slightly sunnier spots. It's tedious, but I put a lot of time and effort into my seedlings. So I make sure they all make it through the home stretch! Good luck with the next batch! At this point it seems like ground sowing might be a safe bet for a lot of things! But I know more about plants, and less about weather. - Today

Some on here go full tilt when a few inches of snow doesn’t happen. Yes I’m full tilt over the fact my country is being taken over by a fucking hate group and almost no one has the appropriate level of urgency and rage about it. And I was confining myself to off topic until a blatantly pro maga list was up in the main threads in New England for 2 fucking days. And when I responded to it my list was deleted within 5 fucking minutes. And the original post was still up. So fuck the rules. Ban me. And make it permanent because I’m not gonna stop. I don’t give a fuck about anything except the fact we have a growing hate group of bigots among us who are our in the open, proud, thumping their chests and taking over the country and no one seems to even be willing to do the smallest at the bare minimum of what should be done. For gods sakes people at least take the time out of your day when you see someone in a maga hat to stop them and say “pardon me sir or mam, I saw your hat and I just wanted to say I know you’re a bigot and a monster and please go fuck yourself” it’s the least we can do. If we aren’t willing to treat them the way we would any other hate group the fight is lost. You wouldn’t act polite to the KKK so stop being polite or tolerating maga, they are a hate group start treating them like one

I’m not gonna stop so they will ban me permanently eventually. So far they’ve banned me twice for short periods and I got banned within a few hours each time it was lifted and I’ve told them I have no intention of changing so… IDGAF about weather so long as my country is being taken over by a bunch of bigots and monsters and not nearly enough people are reacting with the appropriate level of urgency. Normal political means is not going to get it done. We need the left to fight with the same level of hostility and rage that the right does. We have to match their fight or we are going to lose. They wanted F your feelings so let’s give it to them. I’ve started treating every maga I see the way they deserve. Stopping them to tell them I know they are bigots and I hate them. Everyone needs to do the same. We are not going to win this fight by being polite. We need to push these evil scumbags back under the rocks they came out of. This is bigger than politics. They are trying to wrestle the moral control of society away to make it ok to be openly bigots again. We can’t let that happen. And if we don’t push back with the same mean of hostility they are they will win. In almost every movement the larger side doesn’t win, the side that’s more committed and willing to go further does.

Had a few tors pass southwest and southeast of here earlier. Made for an exciting evening. Picked up 0.74" rain today.
-
we freeze tonight Tonight Mostly clear, with a low around 29. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.
-
The CAMs nailed this evening's heavy rain event. The heavy band pivoted right over Cedar Rapids, causing the NWS to issue the first flash flood warning of the season. My total is 3.05", with a bit more to come.

Mlulch can spontaneously combust- which the local firefighters say is what happened at that site. Its been smoldering for weeks. Nothing to do with NWS or weather, at all. Roger that? -

Weren't you the same guy on here that said "mark my words" there was going to be major ice jam issues on the Lehigh this year? Maybe take a bit of a chill pill instead of disrespecting NWS Mets. Just a suggestion. -
37/21 currently… it should drop now that the wind has gone calm. 28/21 at SLK, ha. Growing season is so short in those high elevation valleys like SLK. Nice day overall though. The fields that got an early application of manure sprayed seem to green up real fast… especially after a heavy 1”+ rain. This is all cow corn in the summer.

More wind tomorrow. Shocking.
-
Perfect day after the winds died down; back down to 50 now. Tempted to light up the fire pit for a night cap.

It’s when the buds unfold right? I honestly can see how there’s some subjectiveness to it. I don’t consider budding trees making the canopy turn a slight color as leaf out… I want to see at least some decent opening of the leaves. I feel like folks judge it on a spectrum, like fall foliage. “Leaves are changing” in the autumn to one person may mean you saw a red tree along a swamp. To another person, it’s all still green. “Leaf out” in spring to one person may mean some green buds mixed with sticks with one warm spot seeing some opening. To another person they are waiting for widespread green and opening of buds.

Perfect Easter weather today!
-
Yesterday was relatively warm with temperatures in the 60s F, but it was cloudy with on and off showers and even some rubles of thunder. Today the temperatures cooled back down into the 40s F, but with clear skies that was easily warm enough to set up for some excellent corn snow and step up as the better ski day of the weekend. I was thinking of heading to Stowe for some ski touring this afternoon, but by the time the family was done with the day’s Easter activities it seemed more practical to pop up to Bolton Valley instead. I was hoping that the Timberline area would still have enough snow for touring, and indeed it does, with fairly deep snow on the Showtime trail all the way down to the Timberline Base at 1,500’. I toured up to roughly 2,200’ to the Showtime Headwall below the Timberline Mid Station, and immediately above that point the snow had been scoured and melted out. There were only a couple of tracks around from previous skiers, and we’re nowhere near the point of dealing with sun cup issues yet, so the snow surface was a beautiful sea of perfect peel-away corn. With temperatures in the 40s F, there were no issues with stickiness, so it skied really well. The only weather issue of note was that there was a stiff westerly breeze at times, but the combination of air temperatures, sunshine, and the breeze came together to produce some fantastic snow surfaces. Based on the numbers from the Mt. Mansfield Stake, there’s still 6 to 7 feet of natural snowpack in the higher elevations of the Northern Greens, so that snowpack should be there for quite a while. The spring thus far has been fairly cool and snowy, so it really feels like the corn snow spring skiing season is just getting started. Barring any abnormal warmth, there should be several weeks to go and hopefully many chances to hit the slopes at Stowe as well.

Eff baseball. Eff Elias. NFL back in the spotlight this week. Round 1 of the draft in prime time Thursday. Ravens have 11 picks in the draft. They are so good at accumulating extra picks, and for a team that is always competitive and consistently drafts in the bottom, they always find talented players who can contribute right away.

True, but if you look back you notice that we never even had any sort of coastal event that originated in the SE, rain or snow. Been that way for several years. I assume it has something to do with the lack of southern stream moisture. But I'm just an amateur and by no means an expert. We need a pattern like 2018, whatever that was.
-
Thing is though epic snow patterns around here involve a bunch of factors to line up just right for us to score mostly because our region is often on the fringe of the temp boundaries. As a result we have to thread the needle or else it's too warm. For the rest of the year that doesn't apply, it should not be this hard for it to rain here.

Do you understand what leaf out means ?
-
You never want to hit the panic button too soon, but I think you can already see what this Os team brings to the table. Poor starting pitching and inconsistent hitting. They have yet to win a game where they score less than 4. They’re also tied with the Rockies for most runs allowed after todays embarrassing performance.

Dry weather doesn't do anything. You need actual eggs for them to hatch.
