Mountain West Discussion

Opened a warm season thread for now through Octoberish. -
@donsutherland1and others, This is from Joe Bastardi today. He’s totally convinced that that large amount of cooling in the Atlantic (20N to 20S) over the last year is due to a >50% drop of seismic activity in the “mid-ocean spreading zone” because the area of cooling surrounds a portion of the Atlantic part of that zone. Any comments?

I wonder how much tree loss there was in September 1998 in Lynbrook when we had that severe wx outbreak on Labor Day and an F2 tornado directly hit Lynbrook. That was our biggest severe wx outbreak for this area that I can remember.

Things look stormy and active from Wednesday through the weekend across the front range and plains. A pretty potent shortwave trough and -PNA will result in quite a few disturbances rotating through the region. The orientation and strength of the PNA will determine where the bulk of the precip goes and whether the front range gets in on a favorable moisture advection regime. Currently a marginal risk from the SPC for Wednesday

We have these giant invasive trees here (I'm not sure what they are called) that are spreading like wildfire. Completely cut off the sun and it's affected my planting. Thinking of trimming the top off or just hiring someone to cut it down.

I've read about male trees being a big problem because people are too lazy to plant female trees because they don't want to clean up after them.

E PA/NJ/DE Spring 2025 Obs/Discussion

…Perhaps the infamous “Quakertown Easter Day - Baked Bean Fest” is to blame⁉️ -
-
The 18z operational runs already cut back on the precip as well.
-
Deck wettened !
-
It’s less likely Saturday will produce like that Late spring/early summer temp tomorrow and Wednesday on this NAM run
-
It did manage to touch 60 here, but most of the afternoon was spent in the mid 50s. Felt chilly.
-
In all fairness the operational runs at 12z were all much juicier than their ensembles. Ensembles show around 1" of rain through Monday morning. Neither Stein nor Noah on the way...
-
Whew!!! What a game! And Ovi!?! Let’s go!!!
-
70% chance of rain lol

Occasional Thoughts on Climate Change
LongBeachSurfFreak replied to donsutherland1's topic in Climate Change
This seems rather counterintuitive to me. If one area would benefit from higher precipitation due to higher temps It would be here, as the vast majority is of monsoon origin. These mountains are so high, that they aren’t at risk of temperatures being too high for snowfall until we see something like +5c. It’s going to snow above 18,000’ for a while. Maybe this is a temporary weather phenomenon that evens out over time? Or am I missing something…. -
I’ll take 3/4 right.

There is water falling from the sky. What is going on?

Nice early summer njght!
-
It’s set to 69 or 70

Have to cut down a massive tree in my new yard. Tree itself has to be a 1/4 acre and its roots are ripping apart everything. I really hate to cut it down but I really have no choice, as it completely dominates the yard and is growing into the pool and buckling the patio

Wow, big White Ash are pretty rare this far south. Up north where they are plentiful the borer beetle has been nothing short of devastating. My uncle has a gorgeous property on 120 acres in NE Pa just south of Binghamton at 1900’ and Ash was the predominant tree. The fall foliage was spectacular. Now it’s a stick Forrest. I was up there in October and cut down 30 decent size Ash’s nearest to the house. While that was fun for me, it’s an awful situation. Im assuming you’re talking about an American Dogwood based on the rot pattern. Those too used to be very plentiful and have been dwindling over the years for various reasons.
